The Patrol Division consists of 5 part time officers.  These officers carry out the Police Department’s regular functions including but are not limited to enforcing local ordinances, road patrol, Rock Lake boat patrol, Drug Task Force, assisting other Departments and maintaining peace and good order of the community.

Fine and Forfeiture Payment information:   Traffic Court procedures in the Jefferson County Circuit Court for the Town of Lake Mills. 
 If you do not wish to contest your citation you can avoid the court appearance by sending the bond amount noted on the citation to:

 320 South Main Street
 Jefferson, WI 53549

The payment can made by certified check, bank check or money order payable to “Clerk of Court- Jefferson County.”  The Court will accept that payment as a “no contest” plea and will find you guilty thereon.
 The payment must be received prior to your scheduled court date.  Detach the indicated portion on the informational brochure received with the citation and mail will the payment.
 This information does not apply to citations requiring a mandatory appearance.
 
Common Questions:
 MUST I APPEAR IN COURT ON THE DATE SET FORTH ON MY CITATION?
1) No, if you wish to plead “guilty” or “no contest”

  If you do not appear on the date on the citation or send your payment in advance of that date you will be found guilty based on your failure to respond to the charge and the Court will order you to pay the bond amount within 60 days or suffer a driver’s license suspension if you do not pay within that time.  (You must keep the court informed of any address changes.)
 
2) You may plead “Not Guilty” by mail without appearing in Court.  To plead “Not Guilty” by mail send the following to the Court:
a) Indicate your plea of not guilty in writing to;
b) The charge (traffic violation);
c) Indicate that the Town of Lake Mills issued the citation;
d) The ticket number
e) Your current mailing address and phone number
You must mail this information to the Court to:
   Clerk of Courts Traffic Division
   Jefferson County Courthouse
   320 South Main Street
 Jefferson, WI 53549
This must be received by the Court no later than the date/time listed on the citation.  After the date on the citation, the Court will schedule a pretrial conference and send you written notice of the same to your current address as provided above.

3) Yes, if you wish you may plead in person.;
If you plead guilty, you will be found guilty based on your plea and the Court will order you to pay the bond amount within 60 days or suffer a driver’s license suspension if you do not pay within that time.
If you plead “not guilty”, your matter will be set for a Pretrial conference as outlined below.

PRETRIAL CONFERENCE

Upon a plea of “not guilty,” a pre-trial conference will be set with the Town of Lake Mills Attorney and a written notice will be mailed to you. On the date and time set you may call Attorney Lee J. Leverton at (920) 648-8585 or you may appear in person at his office located at 116 East Madison Street, Lake Mills, WI 53551 (next to the Public Library in Lake Mills.)

TRIAL
You have the right to a trial.  Your trial will be to the Court (a Judge) unless you specifically request a jury trial within 10 days of your initial appearance date or the entry of your “not guilty” plea (if you plead by mail) and pay the required jury trial fee.  The fee for a six person jury trial is $36.00.  Failure to request a jury trial and /or pay the required fee within the time limit acts as a waiver of the right to a jury trial.  (Jury fees are non-refundable.)

IF YOUR CASE IS SETTLED WITHIN 48 HOURS OF THE SCHEDULED TRIAL, YOU MAY BE REQUIRED TO PAY ADDITIONAL COSTS WHICH WILL BE SOUGHT BY THE PROSECUTOR.
